The Data Science for Social Impact (DSFSI) research group in the Department of Computer Science, University of Pretoria in collaboration with the African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI)/Masakhane, are excited to offer
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
We are looking for talented individuals with strong backgrounds in computational, information, social and/or humanitarian sciences, who are skilled in areas such as data archiving and/or human-computer interaction.
For the language model-focused position, experience in language model development is preferred, along with a strong understanding of how datasets are utilized in a machine learning context.
Responsibilities:
As a Postdoctoral and/or Research Fellow, you will have the unique chance to work at the intersection of multiple disciplines—combining your expertise in computational and social sciences. You will be part of a dynamic team focusing on:
Developing a playbook outlining best practices for building machine translation models and Small Language Models for African languages.
Ethical archiving, licensing, and addressing policy gaps in dataset management and usage customized for various audiences and contexts.
This position is supported by data.org with an aim to develop a playbook on how to digitize low resource languages and will also be part of the transdisciplinary African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Pretoria.
Remuneration and Duration:
Salary: R350K-R400K per annum
Duration: 18 months (1 year and 6 months).
