Unlocking Access: Translating UP Research into Indigenous Languages
On Tuesday, 12 August 2025 (09:00–12:00 CAT, Javett Auditorium, UP Hatfield Campus), the University of Pretoria will host the launch of the Translation of Abstracts Project—a bold move to make academic research accessible in Sepedi, isiZulu, and Afrikaans.
Why does this matter? The simple truth: most university research is locked behind English. That leaves millions excluded from knowledge that could shape lives and communities.
This event isn’t just talk. It’s a showcase of a real pilot—25 thesis abstracts, professionally translated and machine-translated using top AI tools, tested side by side. You’ll hear what worked, what didn’t, and why this project is a blueprint for breaking the language barrier in African scholarship.
If you care about language equity, access, or what AI should actually be doing for South Africa, this is for you.
